The Stainless Steel Heat Block: The Heart of Savings
Unlike the copper used in the past, the main heat exchanger of a quality condensing boiler is manufactured in Aluminum-Silicon Alloy or High-Quality Stainless Steel. These materials are designed to resist the harsh corrosive attack of acidic condensates (pH around 4) year after year.
Brands like Vaillant or Junkers bet on robust stainless steel blocks that guarantee a long service life and that the heat transfer to the water circuit does not lose efficiency over time. Low Temperature Water: The Perfect Couple
For condensation to actually happen, the return water from your radiators must return to the boiler cold, preferably below 55ºC (the dew point of the gases). If your old radiator installation is very small and requires sending water at 80ºC, the return will come back at 65ºC and the boiler will not condense (it will function as a normal sealed boiler).

- Why do they say a boiler yields more than 100%? Isn't it physically impossible?
Good question. Traditionally, efficiency was calculated on the Lower Calorific Value (LCV) of gas, which does not count the latent energy of water vapor in flue gases (they assumed it was lost to the atmosphere). By condensing this water vapor, boilers recover that 'lost' energy. If we use the old LCV calculation, they add the standard energy plus the recovered one, giving misleading figures like 109%. If correctly calculated on the Higher Calorific Value (HCV), the efficiency is an excellent 98%, much higher than the 80% of atmospheric boilers.
- What does it mean for a boiler to modulate from 1 to 10?
The modulation ratio (e.g., 1:10) indicates the boiler's ability to reduce its power without turning off. If it's 30kW with a 1:10 ratio, it can work from a maximum of 30kW down to a minimum of 3kW. The more it can reduce, the better. If it's not very cold, it will only consume those 3kW instead of turning on at maximum, turning off, and turning on again (which consumes much more gas and wears out parts).
- Can I install it outside, on the balcony?
Condensing boilers contain a lot of sensitive electronics and freeze protection. Although there are specific models for outdoors (with protective casings and anti-freeze heaters), if a standard boiler is installed on the balcony or exterior gallery of Barcelona, it must be sheltered in a metal cabinet that protects it from direct rain and weather.
- Is it true that the flue gases smell bad or are toxic?
The flue gases from a condensing boiler are actually very clean, low-temperature water vapor (looks like a white mist cloud). They are much less polluting than old boilers (very low NOx emissions). However, they still contain some carbon monoxide and dioxide, so the flue outlet must respect distances to windows set by RITE to avoid nuisance.
