Underfloor heating installation in Barcelona is the pinnacle of residential climate control technology. Perfect Physiological Comfort
Unlike radiators that heat the air (causing heat to rise to the ceiling and leaving your feet cold), underfloor heating distributes heat from the bottom up. This creates an ideal temperature profile for the human body: a pleasant 22ºC at the feet and about 19ºC at head height.
In addition, as there are no air currents by convection, dust and mites are not raised, making it the healthiest heating system and recommended for people with allergies or respiratory problems.
Individual Room Control (Zoning)
The magic of a professional installation lies in the distribution manifold. This central element, hidden in a built-in cupboard in the hallway, receives hot water from the boiler and divides it into multiple independent circuits (one or several per room).
At Fontanero Express we equip these manifolds with electrothermal heads connected to wall thermostats in each room. This allows you to program the bathroom to be at 24ºC in the morning, while the bedroom remains at a cool 18ºC for better sleep. If a room is not used, simply turn off its thermostat without affecting the rest of the house, maximizing energy savings.
No Leaks: The Safety of Continuous Pipe
It's normal to be afraid of installing water pipes under your floor. However, the risk of leaks is practically non-existent in a modern installation. The reason is that we use rolls of plastic pipe (Cross-linked Polyethylene PEX or Multilayer) up to 500 meters in length.
This means that there is not a single joint, elbow or solder under the pavement. The pipe is born in the hallway manifold, runs through the entire room and returns in one piece to the manifold. In addition, before the masons cover the installation with cement, we carry out a strict pressure test by introducing water at 6 bar (four times the normal working pressure) to guarantee 100% that the installation is perfect and watertight.

- Does underfloor heating also cool in summer?
Yes, if combined with a heat pump (Aerothermal). It's called 'Cooling Floor'. In summer, cold water (about 15ºC) is circulated through the floor, absorbing heat from the property. In humid areas like Barcelona, we install dew point sensors on thermostats to prevent ambient humidity from condensing on the floor.
- What thickness or height do I need to install it?
A traditional system with insulation, pipe and mortar requires about 8 to 10 cm of free height on the floor. However, for renovations where the floor cannot be raised so much (due to doors or ceilings), there are 'low profile' or 'dry' underfloor heating systems that only occupy 1.5 to 3 cm.
- What type of flooring is best to put on top?
Ceramic materials (porcelain stoneware, natural stone) are excellent heat conductors and the best thermal option. Parquet or laminate flooring can also be installed, as long as the manufacturer specifies it is 'Suitable for Underfloor Heating' (they must have low thermal resistance, less than 0.15 m2K/W).
- Does it take a long time for the house to heat up?
Yes, underfloor heating has high 'thermal inertia'. When turned on, the water must heat all the mortar and flooring before the heat rises to the air, which can take several hours. Therefore, underfloor heating is not designed to be switched off and on daily; it is configured with smart thermostats to run almost continuously at very low temperature, which is more economical and comfortable.
