If the top of your radiator is cold while the bottom is hot, your system has trapped air and needs a professional bleed. Magnetite and Sludge: The Cancer of the Heating Circuit
Unlike the plumbing of taps which is an open circuit (clean water enters, leaves through the drain), heating recycles the same water for years and years. When air reacts with steel or sheet radiators, black ferric oxide is formed, known as magnetite.
If you touch your radiator and it's hot on top but ice cold in the center and bottom, you have sludge. This black clay weighs more than water and settles at the base of room radiators, drastically reducing their capacity to emit heat. But the serious thing is when this pasty mass travels to the narrow secondary heat exchanger of your brand new boiler, blocking and breaking it. The circuit cleaning we perform prevents these million-dollar disasters.
Chemical Cleaning (Powerflushing): The Total Restoration
When we detect an installation with a high amount of sludge, bleeding is not enough. We disconnect the boiler from the circuit and connect a powerful external hydro-pneumatic pump directly to the pipes.
We circulate at high speed dispersing and descaling cleaners that dissolve all the magnetite and adhered limescale in a couple of hours. After rinsing with mains water until it comes out crystal clear, we inject a corrosion inhibitor. This chemical passivates the metallic interior of pipes and radiators, guaranteeing healthy water for years and drastically increasing the thermal comfort of the rooms.
Balancing: When One Radiator Steals Water from the Rest
Another very common complaint is: 'my radiators in the hallway and living room burn, but those in the last room barely warm up'. Many clients try to bleed those radiators looking for air, but the problem is hydraulic. Water always travels the easiest and shortest path.
During our visit, we perform balancing of the lockshields (the valve located at the bottom of the radiator). We intelligently limit the flow of radiators that are closest to the boiler, forcing the pump to push that hot water to the final rooms. After this small technical adjustment, all corners of your home will heat up equally.

- How often should I bleed the radiators?
The official recommendation is to bleed them once a year, preferably in September or October, before the intense cold arrives. Doing so on this date ensures your first strong heating ignition is silent and the heat is maximum. If you have to bleed them every week, beware! It means you have a hidden micro-leak in the circuit where air enters and water escapes.
- Can I bleed them myself?
Of course. You just need a screwdriver or the bleed key and a small container. Turn the screw slowly until you hear the 'pssss' of air, and close it when a continuous stream of water without bubbles starts to come out. The problem is that bleeding empties pressure from the boiler; if you don't know how to refill the circuit afterwards to 1.5 bar from the fill valve, the boiler will lock due to the lack of water error.
- Why is the water that comes out when bleeding black and smells bad?
Heating water is a stagnant closed circuit. By not being renewed and due to the reaction of the different metals in the installation (copper, aluminum, steel) together with filtered air, a chemical reaction occurs that oxidizes and corrodes the interior of the system. This black magnetite destroys valves and jams your boiler's pump. It requires urgent cleaning.
- What is an automatic bleed valve?
It's a small valve that, through a float or disc, detects air at the top of the radiator and mechanically expels it instantly without you doing anything, automatically closing when it senses water. They are a relief to install on the highest radiators in the property (like towel rails or penthouses).
